Greenville Holiness Churches
What does Holiness mean?
The term "Holiness", in a biblical sense, means "set-apartness, purity, piety, consecration", etc. Specifically, it refers to a lifestyle that is set apart from sin and dedicated to service to God. As it applies to churches, it refers to those churches that teach purity and separation to God in all areas, including dress and lifestyle.
Many churches, including some that once wore the label of holiness, have shied away from the term in recent years because of the negative connotations it has taken on. Abuses of doctrine by some holiness churches have been so extreme in some cases as to make sinners feel excluded from the church. Clearly, Jesus intended for His church to be a place of healing and refuge for all people, and any doctrine that shuts people out is not consistent with the Spirit of Christ.
However, neither should the church move too far in the direction of acceptance either. The Bible does teach purity of the outward man AND the inward man, not just the inward man as some propose. A heart that is cleansed from sin and desires to please God will of necessity reflect itself in the outward appearance and lifestyle.
